First, some background on the Purple Iris Foundation to get to know us......we consider you family!
The mission of The Purple Iris Foundation is to raise awareness, provide support, and give hope to individuals and families affected by cancer.
Christina Parrish founded The Purple Iris Foundation, as a result of what was then her 18 month journey through pancreatic cancer. She was given the life-changing news on June 16, 2008. Needless to say, she initially reacted with shock and then was told that she had only 3-6 months to live with treatment. She was appalled and decided then that no one in her lifetime should be given this news – thus The Purple Iris Foundation was born to help raise awareness and support her fellow patients. Christina is proud to say that she is a 11-year survivor. Christina is living proof that there is hope.......Camp Hope and Healing is her wish to help others.
Camp Hope and Healing is dedicated to cancer survivors, patients, caregivers and their families. Enjoy the healing and peace of outdoor activities, creative arts, complementary therapy's or simply relax in nature by the lake.
Currently, there are no cancer-oriented retreats in the region that deal with all cancers or encompass all individuals living with cancer. Camp Hope and Healing will meet a tremendous need. Not only will the Camp offer a source of refuge for like-minded individuals, it will also promote better mental and physical well being, that can only be achieved in an atmosphere of love, compassion and caring among those who have an in-depth and intimate understanding of what those who live with cancer on a daily basis endure and need to improve their quality of life for themselves and for those around them. The Camp Hope and Healing, will offer a full range of health and wellness oriented activities. Specific attention will be given to encompassing all types and domains of care such as: Food for Healing, Movement for Energy, Meditation, Laughter, Yoga, Reiki, Acupuncture, Arts & Crafts, and outdoor activities with the Maine Cancer Outdoor Adventures Program...like Hiking, Kayaking, Canoeing, and Swimming. In addition, support groups will meet regularly to explore such topics as: Living with advanced Cancer, Grief and Bereavement, Cancer’s impact on the Mind, Body and Spirit, and Relationships, Stress Management and Relaxation techniques, Health and Cancer education, Therapeutic massages, Reiki, Nutrition consultants, Fitness consultants, Managing depression and anxiety, and dealing with doubt and fear.
Cancer is the leading cause of death in Maine, according to the state’s Office of Health and Human Services. At the moment, there are also really no competitors with Palliative Care practices – as it is a newly emerging part of a holistic continuum of care. There are healthcare systems everywhere with inpatient Palliative care programs, but none really with full outpatient components, and certainly none with a hope, healing and wellness retreat component like Camp Hope and Healing.
With your generous donations, we can all make this dream a reality. Please, donate and share!
Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
